Residence Permit for Researchers

In some cases, if you plan to be a full time PhD student or a PostDoc at CISPA, you will be eligible for the [EU Blue Card]/immigration/residence-permit/eubluecard). Doctoral students from third countries can obtain a residence permit for research. As a requirement, they must complete their doctoral thesis as part of a work contract with a research facility in Germany. If the research position is a component of the PhD program as a full-time program, only a permit for studying can be issued.


You are considered a “researcher” if

If you have at least a PhD/doctorate or a suitable university degree enabling you to access PhD degree programmes. Regulations about this permit are covered in Section 18d AufenthG (German Residence Act). You still need a visa prior to entry into Germany (non-EU), so make sure to contact your local German embassy!

What do you need before applying for the entry visa?

  • A hosting agreement between you and CISPA.
  • Any other documents that your local embassy asks for when you apply.
