German energy providing system at a quick glance:

  • There is no single company per area/region, so there is no monopoly.

  • Prices could be a bit higher than what you are used to in your home country.

  • You should know (at least approximately) how much electricity you spend in a year (kWh)

  • Some companies might offer a "bonus" for promising to stay with them for at least a year. Some might even offer cinema tickets or some other discounts

So, how do I find one?

So, how do I find one?

  • One person in a household usually spends 1000 to 1500 kWH per year, however these numbers are estimations and it could depend on what type of appliances you have. (maybe you have a super high power consuming GPU or a CPU, multiple monitors, couple of 3D printers etc.)

  • When you sign up for a provider after giving them your estimate, they charge you a fixed amount every month.

  • Good news is, even if you get the number wrong, at the end of the year, you get either money back (if you spent less than your estimate), or they charge you a bit more (if you spent more than the estimate).

  • It is however good to know how much you approximately spend every year, so the deals you can find be a bit better & accurate for your own consumption level.
